Bonaire : 6 Activities To Do

Surprising Bonaire!

What a coastline! The first impression, my first day: the incredible color of the water and strong luminosity! The Caribbean! Here, everything is clearer, in contrast with a very dry nature, burned by the sun and salt. Bonaire is the smallest of the three Dutch-speaking ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao; its surface area is 294 km².

It is also the least populated, 20,104 inhabitants (in 2019) and the wildest, the beloved island of scuba diving enthusiasts. Bonaire has a particular rhythm like most small islands, against the “frenzy” of the big cities. The people are nice. And if like me, you love nature, sports and tranquility, you will love Bonaire..

1. Driving a Pick-Up Truck in The Washington Slagbaai National Park

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bonaire-Photo-%C2%A9Mademoiselle-Le-K-1-1024x1024.jpg

Starting By Renting a Car

You absolutely need a car, don’t plan on moving by bus to discover Bonaire. The pick-up is comfortable and above all allows you to visit more remote corners of the island, or to go to different beaches. Especially since there are several diving spots along the coast. Divers often leave equipped from the coast without a boat..

This morning, we head to the Washington Slagbaai National Park in the north of the island. On the way, we follow the west coast, where there are a large number of diving spots and the famous 1000 steps beach: the view towards the land, when you swim there, is stunning. The surface area of Washington Slagbaai National Park is 5643 hectares, it is possible to do hikes of different levels, but the heat is pretty intense (photos of the beaches: above and below)!

2. The Next Day: The Southern Tour

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bonaire-South-Photo-%C2%A9Mademoiselle-Le-K-1-1024x1024.jpg

History, Salt, Donkeys and The Beach Club

Back on the road tthis morning: we set off to explore the south of Bonaire! A bit of history: the small white and yellow huts, lined up near the sea, were built in 1850 for the slaves who worked in the salt mines (photo montage above). I entered one of them bent double: you can’t stand up because the ceiling is so low. 1863, the date of the abolition of slavery on the island.

Just before, we stopped at the Salt Pans: a pink and white landscape of salt, separated from the turquoise sea by the road. An improbable mix of colors. Currently the salt is still being exploited. From afar we can see white mountains of salt. I don’t know if the salt increases the temperature, but I had the impression that despite the wind, it was even hotter..

After driving to the southern tip, where the Willenstoren lighthouse is located, for our lunch break we stop at the Hang Out Beachbar, in an enclave that focuses on windsurfing rentals and lessons (photos above and below). I recommend it and tell you more about the food in the “Where to eat” section of this article.

3. Where To Eat

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bonaire-Where-To-Eat-Restaurant-Review-Photo-%C2%A9Mademoiselle-Le-K-1-1024x1024.jpg

My Favorite Restaurants

Overall, I ate very well in Bonaire. Afterwards, we all have our preferences for flavors, setting, atmosphere, etc. My top three (photo montage above): Sebastian’s for dinner (photos 1 and 2), the setting is superb, people make an effort with their clothing and the food is tasty. We went back twice.

For lunch, the Hang Out Beachbar, for its delicious hamburgers: we are still discussing it among ourselves (photos 3 and 4)! We eat with our feet in/on the water (or almost), in a super colorful “hut”, facing a ballet of windsurfers. It is also a bar, where I could spend hours, a lifetime, lol! Neighbor of the Hang Out, the Reef Bar. Probably the most expensive and lightest (in quantity) Cervice I have ever eaten! But also the best! Fine, excellent and our waiter was Belgian (photo 5).

Photomontage below: three other restaurants that I also really enjoyed. The most exotic, the Posada Para Mira (photos 3 and 4) near Rincon: friendly welcome, Caribbean cuisine and panoramic view of the island. More “touristy” by the sea, the Rum Runners (photos 1 and 2), with its very good cervice (not in photo). Not far away, we dined at Ingrediënts, tasty and nicely presented fish dishes, against a backdrop of a superb sunset. The setting is both elegant and relaxed.

4. Scuba Diving, Snorkeling And Mountain Biking

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bonaire-Sports-Photo-%C2%A9Mademoiselle-Le-K-1024x577.jpg

The Darling Island of Divers

There are many of scuba diving clubs/ You can go in pairs from a beach or a coastal sea access, or go by boat to the diving spot and dive supervised by instructors. This is the option we chose. Unfortunately I did not dive, because I felt bad. But after relaxing on the boat and enjoying the view, color of the water, sky, sea spray: this boat trip turned out to be very nice.

I was still able to get a glimpse of the shallow underwater, during another boat trip a few days later. This time on the agenda: snorkeling. This sea trip is more “general public” than the previous one, but still very enjoyable, with a delicious barbecue, shimmering sunset and charismatic captain.

One early morning, we did a mountain bike session with an instructor. It was a premiere for me! And I really liked it, despite the overwhelming heat. The tour, which includes a fairly intense section (a long track with bumps and crevasses in the middle of nowhere), then runs along the west coast with turquoise waters. Awesome views! If you prefer to stay watersports, you will have the choice between kitesurfing, windsurfing etc…

5. Walking in Kralendijk

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bonaire-Kralendijk-Photo-%C2%A9Mademoiselle-Le-K-2-1024x577.jpg

Having A Drink In The Small Capital

We had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the quiet and very colorful Kralendijk, which allows you to discover the history of the island by its monuments. I would recommend to schedule this activity early in the morning or late in the afternoon (but not too late, because night falls quickly), to avoid the heat. You can also discover some street art (in the photomontage below).

6. Where To Stay

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bonaire-Bamboo-Boutique-Resort-Hotel-Review-Photo-%C2%A9Mademoiselle-Le-K-1-1024x1024.jpg

The Bamboo Boutique Resort

My darling! This charming resort is made up of several bungalows, like small Caribbean huts, with a simple decoration with Balinese influences. The mix works very well. Our bungalow is also very comfortable, I was like in a cosy bubble. The owners have thought of everything: even the small barbecue in the bungalow’s garden. And very important, the hammock!

What a pleasure to enter this room after a long flight! A small well-equipped kitchenette and space and wardrobe for clothes and especially the outdoor bathroom with a jacuzzi, deckchairs and few palm trees (photo above and below). Everything is clean and well maintained. It is also very quiet, like a small oasis full of charm 20 km from Kalendrijk. It is difficult to leave the Bamboo Bonaire.

The Sonrisa Boutique Hotel

Then, we stayed at the Sonrisa Boutique Hotel. Another atmosphere, more sporty. This hotel has been renovated recently. Moreover, the common areas and the swimming pool are pleasant, clean and well maintained.

Our room has a large balcony overlooking the pool and garden which is nicely lit in the evening. I would advise against bringing a heavy suitcase if your room is upstairs as there are quite a few steps to climb. And finally, I really appreciated the recently renovated and modern bathroom in our room.

Many thanks to Bonaire Island for this beautiful invitation. As always these are my opinions.

8 Activities To Do In Curaçao

Hi everyone! On the front page of the blog this exciting article on Curaçao again. During this winter period, we need a bit of a dream! And for the lucky ones who plan to go there, some suggestions and addresses to help you plan your trip! Enjoy!

1. Vamos a la playa!

Driving from beach to beach ! Because there are a lot! So, a good option to discover several in one day (especially if your stay is short) on the west coast of Curacao! The water is turquoise and the beaches are often smaller than in the other Caribbean islands, which gives them a more intimate character. You have to rent a car in order to be truly autonomous and fully enjoy the island.

2. Where To Eat

Here are a few restaurants that I really liked. Above, 1 & 2: the beach lounge restaurant Karakter, with a laid back “vacation” setting, the food and the nonchalant atmosphere. I really enjoyed eating with my feet in the sand. 3 & 4: in the center of Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, Plasa Bieu is a covered warehouse close to the main market, with 6 restaurants serving local cuisine. We sit at large tables facing the cooks who prepare your order in front of you. Tasty spicy Creole dishes based on fresh products. The atmosphere is simple and friendly, we chat with our neighbors at tables, a mix of locals and tourists.

Below: 1 & 2, at the Kas di Piskado Purunchi, located a small house with a wood terrace on the water, near the fishermen’s boats. The Krioyo-style fish (local Curaçao cuisine) is delicious. The owner and her team are very warm, I didn’t want to leave. Better to book, because it is often full. 3 & 4: in a colonial house, the Number 10 is an eclectic and rather trendy restaurant. One of the lounges where we ate reminded me of Havana. The portions are generous and my salad was yummy.

3. Taking a Kiting Lesson

When I was offered an initiation to “kiting“, I did not understand that it was kitesurfing (lost in translation, lol!). I was more curious than motivated. Then we drove to Tjapko (the instructor) playground, a salty land near a salt lake in the middle of nowhere under a blazing sun. Tjapko is an excellent teacher who before going into practice, explains in detail the basics of kitting (the wind), in order to avoid any accident.

Feet on the sand, you learn how to let the sail evolve with the wind. Not so obvious at first. And right there, I got caught up in the game. Sometimes I direct the sail in the air, sometimes I follow it as long as possible. It’s exciting and your arms work hard. At the end of the lesson, I will go a bit in the lake and only with the sail to discover the sensation of the wind and its strength in the water. A unique experience, awesome!

4. Street art dans Willemstad

Following our guide Chris, found of street art, we discover the capital of Curaçao from a creative perspective. From paintng to painting, we walk in different neighborhoods of central Willemstad, including Punda, Otrobanda and Scharloo. A mix of historic colonial buildings and contemporary constructions. It’s really hot and the sun burns my skin. Through street art, we learn more about the history of the city and island. I really liked this street art tour which we ended with a drink at De Broeders (photo ci-dessus / Insta : @debroederswillemstad).

You Need A Cool Place To Stay …

Two very nice accommodations in Willemstad: a stylish room in the picturesque house of the Terra Boutique Hotel, with an amazing view of the sea and fantastic (super) host, Janette. Or the Renaissance Curaçao Resort & Casino with a small artificial beach overlooking the sea and very convenient parking. Two very pleasant and very different atmospheres in two cool districts of the capital of Curaçao.

5. Diving And Relaxing In Klein Curaçao

A little before 7 a.m., we arrive at Spaanse Water pier, the starting point of our boat trip to Klein Curaçao, aboard the Serendipity boat of the agency Miss Ann Board Trips. This day trip takes you to this idyllic islet an hour by boat from Curaçao. The color of the sea is stunning, between turquoise and deep marine blue.

Once on the islet, I join the instructor for a 50-minute scuba dive to discover the drop offs and reefs. Back from the dice, a barbecue lunch with the best grilled chicken of all my stay in Curaçao! Then I return in the water till we leave the islet. I didn’t have the courage to brave the sun and the wind to visit the iconic abandoned lighthouse, Prins Hendrik, dating from 1849.

6. Quad In XXL Landscapes

Action! A little bit of quad with Eric’s ATV Adventures to have a glimpse of the East and North of Curaçao landscapes! Honestly, the pace is so fast with sometimes, very narrow paths lined with cacti that I let my friend drive the whole tour. Usually, I drive the quad half the tour. Landscape level: cave, small mountain and gorgeous panorama! Energizing! And don’t forget your sunglasses and a thin cotton scarf to protect your nose and mouth from dust.

7. Sunset At Sea

After the quad (and a quick shower), we have a fantastic sunset on the elegant sailboat of Hilde and Norbert, the lovely owners of Maxie Sailing who organize tailor-made trips. An absolut exclusive Curaçao experience! Hilde has prepared really good apetizers. We had such a magical time with our warm hosts. Imagine ending a boat trip under a starry night while chatting with friends. My definition of luxury. Thank you so much Hilde and Norbert! www.maxiesailing.com

8. A Very Physical Hike!

This morning walk begins early from 6.30-7 am to avoid the strong heat and too many people during the ascent (very physical, soldiers train there) of the highest point of Curaçao, at 372 meters: the mountain Christoffelberg which is located in Christoffelpark, the biggest National Park of the island. The start of the mountain is at level 0 and like in video games, as you get closer to the summit, there are larger and larger protruding blocks of rock and increasingly narrow passages that challenge the muscles of your legs, knees and arms. But the view is stunning.

Egypt : 7 Activities I Did in El Gouna

1. Diving in The Red Sea

Like all scuba diving lovers, I could not ignore a dive in the Red Sea!

During my short stay in El Gouna, I had a nice dive with the Colona Diving Club. I did not dive deep, within 20 meters, but with a good visibility. Perfect as a refresher, after more than a year without diving! The whole team is very professional.

Leaving early in the morning by boat, we returned in the middle of the afternoon. After my first (and unfortunately unique) dive, I had a seasickness because there were a lot of big waves. But the landscape and the color of the water were stunning.

2. Discovering By Bike El Gouna

What is better than a bike ride?

Created 25 years ago north of Hurgada, this small seaside town, facing the Red Sea, is covered with countless lagoons. We ride a bicycle in a gradient of blue and turquoise. Pure happiness for the eyes!

There is a lot of wind and small bridges. We often ride on wooden bridges, while discovering points of view that are difficult to access otherwise. It’s a real pleasure! To experience early in the morning or at the end of the day, to avoid a strong sun.

3. Riding A Quad In The Desert

El Gouna is at the gateway to the desert

So we tested two types of activity to visit “the desert”: the jeep safari and the quad with Alex Safari. Both have strengths. But, I preferred the quad, because the tour is more active and spectacular.

It feels like entering the decor where the dust is master. We drove fast enough, with a first stop in the camp of a Bedouin family.

All along the trail, there are some small stops to “explore” geological curiosities, such as caves (photos above). The highlight of the excursion: the sunset facing the Dry Canyon, a landscape from a western!

5. Relaxing In A Beach Club

Yes, Lazing In The Sun!

We did not look far. Ideally located opposite our hotel, the Three Corners Ocean View, we had lunch and spent the afternoon at the Moods Restaurant & Beach Club.

The view is lovely and the atmosphere young and cool. I felt asleep while scanning the horizon and the sea, listenning some lounge music! Like everywhere in El Gouna, there is a lot of wind (which can be cold).

6. Jeep Safari In The Desert

Back To The Desert!

This time in a jeep! Nice tour (with a stop in the same camp of a Bedouin family) as when we were on quad. Same view for the sunset on the Dry Canyon.

Only the rhythm changes (longer stops along the trail). So I might recommend the jeep if you don’t like the quad, or go with your parents (and they don’t like or drive a quad, lol!).

7. Dining In The Marina

El Gouna By Night

The two hotels where we stayed are very comfortable. So we had most of our dinners there. That’s why I would not be able to do a review of the restaurants in the marina of El Gouna.

We only dined in a restaurant in the marina : a delicious and delightful experience. And as we strolled along the pontoons cluttered of yachts, I saw several restaurants with beautiful terraces. The atmosphere is very nice and laid back.

I also spotted some shops, like Malaika which offers linens (with Egyptian cotton? Photos below).
