Cologne, Germany: The Belgian Quarter, Belgisches Viertel

I’ve never thought of Cologne

as a trendy destination to spend a weekend if Thalys was not invited me to the event Le Bloc in the Belgian Quarter, the hipster Babel with the streets names: Brüsseler Str., Antwerpener Str. and Genter Str.!

I arrive in Cologne with an incredible blue sky, blazing sun and 30°! The station is opposite the famous Cathedral (massive). And the Belgian Quarter is 10 minutes by taxi, about 20 minute walk or 2 metro stations.

Here Pharrell could have filmed a sequence shot of Happy!

It feels good instantly, arty atmosphere (without attitude) and smiling people. I walk from one designer shop to another, when I find a pastry with amazing couture cakes (picture 7, N°2).

I also notice shops with well known brands such as Marimekko (picture above), flea markets and welcoming shaded terraces (I do like!). And quite unusual for me, people walk with their beer in hand day and night.

Le block has highlighted designers for seven years.

This event focuses on  fashion, design and music in Cologne. This year among the special guests: Conni Kaminski from Brussels and Toos Franken from Antwerp.

After the fashion shows, invited by the Flandern, we head towards Franz, a very nice small restaurant (picture below, Nos. 1 & 2), featuring an assortment of flammekueches with extra fine paste and varied flavors (salmon, goat-zucchini …). Plus an exclusive live of the beautiful Mariama, a German folk singer living in Paris who plays for us only! Then Conni joined us.

Around midnight, the streets are crowded (pictured below, No. 3, a wood bar). Happy vibe, people talk and drink next to the bar. We choose an outdoor bar at random. After several cocktails, a diet coke for me and more giggles, I collapsed on my bed at 3am!

My tip : Book your hotel in the Belgian Quarter if you like to go out at night. There are many nice bars and small restaurants. Walking distances: you can do everything on foot in the neighborhood.

I was a guest of Thalys and these are my opinions of course!

Meeting Esther Perbandt in her shop in Mitte, Berlin

Quick stop in Berlin: no way not to visit

my favourite German designer, the Berliner Esther Perbandt in her shop in Mitte. I really like her over sized bags and caftan dresses and scarves which folded, looks like a drawing of a folded shirt (picture 1,  “Format” collection / Spring-Summer 2012). Brillant and completely crazy, like the strong personality of Esther.

If today her designs are qualified by the German press: “avant-garde”, few years ago, the same press named her: the “German Isabel Marant”! The ones who has followed my blog since the beginning, maybe you will remember an interview of Esther in Spring 2008! It was one of my first posts!

In the shop, I see a coming and going

of customers, friends and artists from France and California, assistant and trainees. Some goes to the workshop. The atmosphere is relaxed in spite of the preparation of the coming up show. Laughter, the team works and chats.

Undaunted, Esther explains me she has totally changed her life and mind for 4 years. She created her shop and finally assumes her workhalic temper. And finally she feels free to be herself.

Her today designs are refined,

stripped of any unnecessary ornament. New friendships have led to exciting artistic collaborations, like with the painter Jaybo (last picture). I’ve discovered one of his piece of art, “Rendez-vous avec la lune”, on a wall of the shop (picture above).

A few snapshots, barely time to see some of her next designs and I really have to go, me, Ms super champion for missing planes! Bye bye Berlin and long live Esther Perbandt!

INTEVIEWS & DESTINATIONS

Berlin, Germany: Alexanderplatz, A Little Shop & Communist Remains

Why going to Alexanderplatz?

For its architectural remains of the communist era. See how the architecture of the late sixties (even restaured) remains an absolute ugliness! It’s so ugly that it could lead to a kind of aesthetic which reminds me of the excellent German film Good bye Lenin by Wolfgang Becker with Daniel Brühl!

Picture below: The Urania-Weltzeituhr, the universal clock dating from 1969. You can also go there for very practical reasons: the Park Inn (hotel opened in 1970!), The Kaufhof Galeria department store (for his food center), near the quaint streets of the trendy Mitte.

And the little souvenir gift shop, Aus Berlin: Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse 17, open from 10am to 10pm (pictured above).
