Azores: São Miguel Island

From Ponta Delgada To Furnas

Chá Gorreana

Yesterday I was in the small island (and gem) Santa Maria. Today, we discover the largest island of the Azores archipelago São Miguel with an area of 744.7 km ². Same team and awakening to dawns! We drive to the tea plantations.

After the tea of the Seychelles, the one of the Azores! So we visit of the Chá Gorreana family factory which produces organic tea. In the photos above and videos below: some key steps in the manufacture of tea (from leaf to tea bag).

If you have trouble watching the videos, refresh the page and move the cursor a bit forwad on the timeline. And if it doesn’t work, do not hesitate to leave me a comment..

Next: Furnas

Poça da Dona Beija

Arriving at Furnas, we head towards the Poça da Dona Beija thermal baths with ferruginous spring water (photos above). I really enjoy the setting: the garden at the entrance of the complex reminded me of Kyoto. I guess I miss Japan.

Unfortunately I didn’t have time to test the water’s benefits. Our timing is tight. We are on our way to the geysers in another area of Furnas (picture below).

Caldeiras Termas

A lunar landscape with boiling water wells and smoke. It’s fascinating and mostly because these geysers are so close to homes (photos and videos below).

At Furnas Lake

End Of Cooking The Lunch

A short drive to Furnas Lake to attend the last step of cooking the Cozido das Furnas, a traditional dish cooked in the earth (quite similar to the French Pot au feu). The attraction is very touristy, but it is not annoying as the landscape around is beautiful!

Each restaurant has a dedicated “oven” (a deep hole in the earth), where the meal has cooked for several hours. A reduced team of men digs up to take the dish out of the earth. Then loaded in a van trunk, it will be delivered to the corresponding restaurant. For us: the restaurant of the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel.

The Terra Nostra Garden Hotel

A Smart Art Deco Hotel

We have lunch at the cosy Terra Nostra Garden Restaurant. The art Deco interior evokes the felted world of Hercule Poirot (the super star detective of Agatha Christie)!

Our main dish, the Cozido das Furnas is made up of different meats and vegetables cooked “à l’étouffée” (sort of a steamed stew). I defenitly like the local bread, its texture is close to the pancake, so delicious!

Then a long walk in the Terra Nostra Botanical Park with the huge 35-40 ° ferruginous thermal pool and superb gardens with over 2000 species of trees and a magnificent collection of camellias (video and photos below ). Yes, I love camellias!

Before Leaving Furnas

A coffee at the Furnas Boutique Hotel (pictures below), decorated by Nini Andrade Silva (yes again!). In my article about Ponta Delgada, you can see her interior design for the Azor Hotel.

Third photo below (and video): the wide swimming pool of the Pedras Do Mar Resort & Spa where we tasted some Gins of the Azores in late afternoon! More original than an umpteenth cocktail! And nice minimalist contemporary interior design.

Dinner At The Caloura Bar In Lagoa

In A Small Creek

Close to fishing boats, we dinner at the Caloura Bar in a friendly genuine atmosphere. The grilled fish is really fresh and tasty!

The Next Day

Before The Plane

Already our last morning in the Azores! Early departure to the Ponta Delgada market where I buy cheeses to offer (the “scent” in the suitcase, lololol!). Then we arrive at the soothing Lake Fogo, located in a nature reserve (photos and latest video below).

And we are lucky, nobody’s on the site! Short walk to one of the peaks around the lake. I am super happy (I need to exercise). But quickly, we have to go down and to rush to the airport! We’re almost late!

Bye Bye Awesome Azores!

Sete Cidades

A last view of the Green and Blue Lakes, which according to legend have been formed by the tears of a pastor and a princess having a forbidden love.

Question (from a former student in Anthropology): why are lakes and waterfalls often the results of forbidden love in different cultures? If you have any explanation, you’re welcome to leave a comment below!

At midday, the Ponta Delgada airport. Next stop : Cascais via Lisbon … and I hope an ice cream at Santini!

My Beauty Routine For The Tropics

The Beautiful Bottle

To feel beautiful. I love to spray this aerial subtle water of perfume. The Aqua Allegoria Flora Rosa by Guerlain is fresh as a flowery delicate haze. A cheerful elegant note of lightness that remind me the picture of a Japanese cherry tree. I recommend this scent if you are allergic to the now trend of the too sweet fragrances.

Daily Skin Care Regimen

The Cocoon Trio

Many plants and Ayurveda in the Aveda products for my dehydrated sensitive skin that overheats in the heat! On the picture: 1, my favorite, the Botanical Kinetics Toning Mist which moisturizes, refreshes, soothes and matifies my mixed skin (shining in humid warm climate), thanks to white oak, witch hazel and peppermint. Very pleasant to spray, I use it at any time (when I’m not in the sun).

2, the Tulasāra Firm Concentrate serum whose Tulasāra name means “moving towards balance” in Sanskri, is composed of 97% natural products (ayurvedic plants). 3, I use the Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Soft Creme both as a day creme and a night creme. Its creamy fine texture is very pleasant to apply and moisturizes my skin well.

4, I like to have impeccable feet and the white varnish brings an improbable touch of chic.

Protection and Repair

After-Sun Skin Care Routine

I try to avoid our best frenemy (the sun), but I love swimming and moving on the beach too much … So I protect my skin (face and body) with my inseparable Anthélios XL indice 50+ by La Roche Posay (2). I’ve noticed over the years, the texture of sunscreens has significantly improved. Lighter and less tacky.

Evening routine = repair, with the Excellence Code by Yon-Ka (overall anti-aging composed of 92% natural products).  After cleansing, I put it on face and décolleté for an hour (or sometimes less). Then I remove the excess, before applying my serum and my cream.

For hydration of the body, I use the after-sun creme, Posthélios by La Roche Posay with Aloe Vera that I mix with a little organic olive oil (moisturizing and nourishing).

Lavage en douceur

The Softness Trio

I must be a Martian (lol). I find the salt of the ocean and the wind have a postive effect on my skin … Hence the need to clean my face with organic olive oil and my body with non-stripping mild products.

1, the discovery, my other favorite: the Thai Chamanard Glycerin Soap by Banyan Tree (1) with coconut oil, olive oil, vitamin E and Aloe Vera leaf. This soap is so sweet that I also use it to wash my face! 4. The very nice toiletry kits offered by the Banyan Tree.

2. Other very soft body product: Huile de douche Hydratante & Tonifiante by Bio Beauté by Nuxe (99.3% natural ingredients) with the invigorating scent of the Cedrat of Corsica! A pleasure to apply for a silky soft skin. 3. I remain faithful to the Vichy products especially in summer, although I am not a big fan of the texture and scent of the Douche Spa Gel-Huile (gel-oil shower).

Girly

Blue, White and Glitters

Kiko nail polish: a white one for the feet (4), blue ones for the hands (2) with L’Oréal and Essie glitters offered by my mother to illuminate my manicure!

On the other hand the application of the white nail polish (on natural nails), it’s an Odyssey! Several thin layers to have a white white finish – drying hours, while trying to avoid a plaster effect!

The Sunset View

The Gecko Bar

The Savoy Seychelles Resort & Spa is located opposite the busy beach of Beau Vallon, North of Mahé Island (first photo of the article).

Late in the afternoon, with Lisa, my friend from Seychelles, I discover the promenade next to the beach, with many restaurants, bars … and barbecues of fresh fish!

It’s very lively and crowded (too much people for me). I am happy to have spent most of my stay in the South of Mahé which is more preserved and quiet.

At the Gecko Bar (photo above), one of the restaurants and bars of the Savoy Seychelles Resort & Spa, you can enjoy a pleasant view of the spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean (photo below).

The Room

Great Bedding

The comfortable functional room has a well-equipped bathroom with separated bath, shower and toilet. Nice details: L’Occitane bath products. And a little balcony with a view of the swimming pool, where I used to rest on a sofa the afternoons..

The Swimming Pool

Huge And Graphic

The largest pool in the Seychelles islands! To be honest, I didn’t have time to swim there, because I was busy to visit the different parts of Mahé. I like the tiled drawing of the flowers (photo montage above), more graphic in the evening with the lights.

Boasting a central position in the vast complex, the pool is close to the Grand Savoy restaurant, where I had breakfasts and dinner.

The Gardens

Many Shades Of Green

I really enjoy stopping on the way and stroll ing in one of those greenery oases (photo above). Luxuriant and scattered on all the resort, they offer a little freshness and privacy.
