Portugal: A walk and restaurant in Nazaré

Nazaré-Old Town-1-Photo Mademoiselle Le K-copyright 2013

After visiting the lighthouse of Nazaré

and a walk on the rather infinite beach, Praia do Norte (“North Beach”, where you can find the biggest waves in the world), my friends want to lunch. At 5 p.m. on Sunday … I take the opportunity to discover some monuments of the old city bathed in a gold light. Pictures from 1 to 3: small chapel with beautiful azuleros blue and white inside (picture 2), overlooking the ocean. We are heading to the part of town along the seaside (picture 4).

A Celeste

Pictures from 5 to 8 : one of us had more flair and leads the posse to an unpretentious restaurant. The bottom of the air is cold, fortunately the terrace facing the sea is completely covered (picture 7). Just sitting, I’m discoverig two “Garrett McNamara” menus  (picture 8) … Yes, signed by the legendary surfer who defeated here in Nazaré, all records of the biggest waves ever surfed in the world! The first record in 2011, with a wave of 23 m and the second record in 2013, with a wave of 34 m (or a little more) at 45 years old! Celeste is one of the Hawaiian champion and Nicole, his wife’s canteens. I’m not hungry, but my friends ordered an excellent fish! And the lady who cooks is adorable. Avenida República 54, Nazaré, T. +351 262 551 695.

The Famous Petticoats

Pictures below : the fashion detail that struck me in the street (so me, lol!): several older women are dressed up with “puffed” skirts reaching below the knees. In fact, it is a feature of the traditional costume of Nazaré. Several petticoats are juxtaposed under the skirt (picture 10: archives of the lighthouse of Nazaré). In the past, women wore petticoats up to 7 for a festive dress!

3 Restaurants in Lisbon, Portugal

Restaurants in Lisbon-Cervejaria da Esquina-1-Photo Mademoiselle Le K-copyright 2013

Oops who spoke about diet? LOL! Invitations, no way to refuse them, right? Especially when different friends invited me to three restaurants, with different atmospheres, foods and interiors! Dinner with girlfriends, arty lunch in a funky hostel and a more formal restaurant of Portuguese cuisine. For all three, it is best to book ahead.

1. CERVEJARIA DA ESQUINA (pictures above & 2)

First crush for the good atmosphere, people are easy going and the service is nice! And the food is creative. Delicious fried (but not greasy) shrimps with a super yummy avocado sauce. And as a dessert, although I’m not found of chocolate mousse (no, it’s true!) … I cracked for one! Lovely dishes presentation and the minimalist  decor could be Nordic! Thanks girls, you were able to cheer me up!  Rue Correia Teles n°56, Campo de Ourique. T. (+351) 213 874 644.

2. THE DECADENTE (picture above and lay out below)

And here is my second fav! Bohemian attitude in Bairro Alto: the interior is a fresh mix of vintage and design and the atmosphere is laid back, with a traveler spirit. Arty friends invited me in this hostel, the trendiest of Lisbon, of course … The Decadente offers at lunch, a cheap tasty light menu, with nice portions (neither too much nor too little). The first meal (1), a pea soup, the dish (2), a cod (Bacalao) with a little green salad and for the dessert, a mini portion of fresh fruit salad. Bubbling! Rua Sao Pedro de Alcantara 81. T. A CHARCUTERIA (picture above and lay out below)

Invited by a friends couple that I love, it was really a pleasure to see them and share with them this moment in this chic restaurant. But I found the place (a reference to Lisbon) pretty pretentious and lacking of warmth and generosity! We were seated near a table of ten smokers who smoked cigarillo and cigars! Enough to lose the flavor of food! What about the Portugese food? Excellent Empada da galinha (1),a kind of small chicken pie. But I didn’t like the main course (2): Rissois of camarao, shrimp fritters (the sauce inside tasted like Bechamel), too heavy. Accompanied by a tomato rice (Arroz de tomate), too salty. Rua do Alecrim 47 A, T. (+351) 213 423 845

Poland: Safari Bison and Lunch @ Kurozweki Palace

Poland-Kurozweki Palace-8-Photo Mademoiselle Le K -copyright 2013

Here is my last post about my weekend in the Świętokrzyski (Holy Cross) region, with a safari bizon in the Kurozweki estate ! Yes I know, I often have funny ideas ! So I went visiting some peaceful specimen of American bison, more than 80 animals (picture 1) ! Honestly, it’s not really my thing and apparently I ‘m not the only one, LOL (picture 2) ! But kids are fans ! I’ve never imagined there could be so many (super tough) mosquitoes in Poland! I go inside the palace (picture 3), where the tour begins with a subterranean maze and old foundations. Back in daylight, we head to the small family museum (picture 6). Our guide, the son of Earl Popiel is a great storyteller (picture 5). Each object, table and photo is related to anecdotes or dramas and the family saga often flirts with the history (the one we learnt at school). Pictures 7 & 4: the long ballroom and the intimate chapel. Pictures 8, 9 & 10: our beautiful table and delicious lunch of Polish traditional cuisine. And guess what we ate?
