Caussette, Paris: The Interview of Berangere Portalier

Definitely this beginning of September is  my French “month”: many fairs, events and interviews in Paris and Lyon. Let’s start with the independant new magazine that rocks the French feminine press, Causette! Subtil and sexy cool for women with a brain “from 15 to 91 years old“, adds Berangere Portalier, the bubbly chief editor. “We make the paper we’d like to read“. And we “normal but not banal girls” (in the magazine charter), we do love Causette!

– Boys buy  Causette for their girlfriend too. Greg and Gilles are the founders of the magazine. Greg is a press enthusiastic. He noticed his girlfriend didn’t have anything to read. He designed a false cover that women really liked. Then it took us one year and half  from the idea to the magazine archievement. We were wondering : « will my sister read this? ». And we decided to develop more a human approach.

Is Causette a feminist magazine – I want to precise for me feminist is not an insult, neither against men? Yes, Causette is a feminist. The word has been misused, I really hope we’ll success to rehabilitate it! We really take care not being overlooked in politics associations.  We could be nice partners, that’s it.

What is your background? Anthropology, Greg too. I’ve been a student during a long time, I am a great disciple (laughs). I didn’t learn journalism. I was a chief editor (video editing). Liliane, the other chief editor came from Charlie Hebdo (the famous French satirical comics magazine in the 70’s-80’s).

What’s making Causette different? Causette wants to favour a subjective writing. And to create an empathy and to make a literary effort, without giving any lesson to readers. The magazine sections change in every (or almost) issue! The magazine doesn’t look like what we were looking for at the beginning. I think it is better (smile). We do the paper we enjoy reading. We’ve reinvented almost everything. This hand made part makes us different. We need to keep that. We are free, cause we are shareholders of the magazine. We started six people with 90.000 euros.  Today we believe more in Causette than two years ago!

Do you have time to write? I am the one who organizes everything. I write a little and I’m not sure about my writing. Liliane writes a lot. But I like both organizing and writing.

It seems to be not so far from editing? Yes, in English it’s the same word : chief editor ! It’s really near the editing, we work with different pieces to bring together and organize.

Causette in the future? We have so many ideas. We try to be a little be wise (laughs). Making things we really do know. For instance, it’s press. But we defenitely want to develop the website.

The press likes you, don’t you? Yes, they do. They really like us, we have lots of good articles. Journalists present Causette as a freedom space in the French press. We created a kind of niche. Now I say to myself: you can die (laughs).

A success story? Causette made me grown. It’s really rewarding for me. I have insomnia… I want to stay human, near people.

Now you can believe me : Causette rocks, doesn’t it? Big thanks Berangere!

Park Hyatt Tokyo: Meeting with Philippe Roux-Dessarps

The lift stops at the 52nd  floor,

I’m heading for the New York Bar. Yes, the smart bar of Sofia Coppola’s « Lost of Translation » (pictures 1 & 2)!

Jazzy atmosphere, fascinating hypnotic view from the sky of an endlessly Tokyo, the feeling is unreal. In the penumbra enhanced with indirect lights, a smiling waitress leads me.

I have a meeting with Philippe Roux-Dessarps, the General Manager of the Park Haytt Tokyo that occupies the top 14 floors of the Shinjuku Park Tower (last picture), designed by the famous Kenzo Tange, father of modern Japanese architecture.

Everyday I ask my team : how did you surprise a client today?

We have varied customers (50% are leisure customers), lots of regular customers looking for a particular atmosphere and enjoying the intimacy of the hotel.

– Can you explain why we feel like in a cocoon in the Park Hyatt Tokyo?

– The staff humility. And we have few rooms : with 178 rooms, the hotel is intimate by Asian standards. And we don’t have a business atmosphere. The timeless design too : the Park Hyatt Tokyo has been an established hotel for 16 years. John Morford designed the interiors to feel like in a small elegant, personal, residence.

–  What is your next goal?

– Staying open to the next generations too. Staying modern without becoming gadget!

Here are the pictures of my favorite spaces.

At the 40th floor, I really enjoy the delicious Japanese cooking and the fantastic view of Fuji San, in Kozue restaurant (picture 3). I had a big crush on the superb earthenware plates and dishes created by craftsmen throughout Japan.

Peaceful atmosphere in the Library: a choice of 2000 books about arts, history, cultures and dictionaries (picture 4). Where the light is magic in late afternoon, when the sun falls down behind Fuji San (pictures above & below).

Great details: reproductions of Fellini’s draws

in the cozy corridors leading to the rooms, spa and swimming pool (picture above & below).

At the 47th floor, the 65 feet (20 meters) swimming pool

At least a hotel swimming pool where we can swim… looking down on Tokyo, with a sunrise or sunset light : exhilarating!

In the Spa I could stay hours and hours, between whirlpools, wet and dry saunas, cold plunge pools and 360 degree body showers… treatment rooms and relaxation rooms, with in the background the panoramic view (picture below).

Every single detail is tidily thought: from the excellent Australian products ASEOP, to the ladies razors in the showers, to stay perfect in the country of the perfection.

Joëlle Scoriels in the backstage of “Sans Chichis” TV program

Here I am, between the back and forth of technicians and the laughs of the production team of the « Sans Chichis » TV program of the RTBF, one of the Belgium national channels. I follow  Joëlle Scoriels in her dressing room, a capsule bathroom refurbished in a cloakroom. Short time break, the shooting will start again.

– I am super lucky. I work.

Eyes suddenly serious, the spruce TV host of « Sans Chichis » is not another stupid bimbo. Joëlle is certified in “Philologie romaine” (classics literary studies) and in design at La Cambre :

– I can draw, I can write. I didn’t want to work in TV. It happenend by chance at a diner. I’ve never had any career goals, I just want to feel good.

– I’ve been six-seven years at MCM Belgique (a Music TV channel). I started at the Top 50 TV program.I was quite sad, I didn’t like the MCM’s flow. I really had to learn this « youngster » attitude.

Then she was a feature editor at « 50 Degrés Nord », the cultural TV progrm hosted by Eric Russon on Arte Belgique. But with « Sans Chichi », she is free to fully express her talent :

– It’s the first time I host a real big TV program, with a real content. I think being the same person. It’s my real me on the air. To be honest, I like to watch the TV program. Thanks to the team’s complicity, it’s fluid. They are all fantastic.

Showing me the outfits carrying, Joëlle takes the drink of wine served by Gérald Wathelet, the funny chief of the TV program :

– They take care of me (in a dazzling smile). Bouzouk is in charge of my stylism in the TV program. I am not a fashionista with a shopping addiction. And I’m not sad about it. In real life, I get dressed in Zadig et Voltaire and Diesel. But I really enjoy decoration : items, contemporary design full of colors, the sixties and mixes. I am a stay-at-home person. I have a seventeen months baby. It’s amazing. A wonder, the ecstasy! I am absolutely crazy about my little boy. And since he was born, I’ve been afraid of the death every second.

Sandrine Graulich, Mrs Production, enters and checks notes with Joëlle. Few weeks ago, I’ve met Bouzouk, a Belgian famous make-up artist. I guess he found me a bit crazy! Now they call Joëlle on stage. Favorite request : Brussels ?

– I’ve emigrated to Waterloo, unfortunately ! I am Brussels, I love Brussels. This town is a tangle, nineteen districts with an social coeducation for a long time. Ixelles district is a good exemple. I am from the Forest district, it’s a very mixed place. I love going in fancy dress of tourist. Brussels is a « new world » city, where I always know brasseries to go.

Last sentence?

– I feel highly happy! I just miss a Rochefort  10, it’s a smooth beer, avec a small note of caramel and banana. Wild !

Joëlle’s favourite :

The Walvis Café, “a trendy bobo bar and great location to meet friends in the Canal’s district”. Rue Antoine Dansaertstraat 209, 1000 Brussels, Tel : 02 219 95 32

Thanks Joëlle!
