Wow ! Awesome Snow!

For a long weekend (too short for my liking), I’m rediscovering this superb resort in Savoy, France! I’m taking you with me! After half a day’s travel, we arrived at the hotel, the Ecrin Blanc Resort Courchevel. Watching the snow always makes me euphoric.

The Hotel

Comfortable, modern, and ideally located at the foot of the slopes. This 4-star hotel didn’t exist during my first stay in Courchevel. The Ecrin Blanc resort is located in the village of Courchevel 1650 (Moriond), right next to the Aquamotion. You can even walk there in your bathrobe and slippers (by taking the corridors connecting the two buildings).

It’s too late to go skiing. So, after the best salad I’ve had in ages at the hotel restaurant, Le Grill, I spend the rest of the afternoon at Aquamotion. A very pleasant aqua center with some outdoor pools, a spa, and saunas. But there are many people..

As for our room, it was spacious and comfortable, with a living area, a modern bathroom, very good bedding, and above all, a beautiful view (photo below). A special mention goes to the cinema room, where I happily rewatched ‘Les Bronzés font du Ski’, a famous French comedy loved by different generations!).

Day 2 : Skiing & Aquamotion

Put On Your Skis

Courchevel boasts a 150 km ski area. Today, the weather isn’t great, and visibility fluctuates between average and poor, with a thick whiteout and a few patches of sunshine here and there.

After a long break from skiing, I always prefer to start again with a lesson with an ESF instructor. What a fantastic feeling, gliding on slopes lined with fir trees! This is followed by a fun lunch in a restaurant on the slopes, and I return to the hotel in the afternoon.

Day 3 : A Walk, Then A Dog Sled Ride

The Lac de la Rosière, Dogs And Snow

For our last day, the weather seems to be improving a bit! We start the day with a walk around the Lac de la Rosière.. The scenery is as captivating as ever (photos 1 & 2 in the photomontage below) In fact, the first time I came to Courchevel, I went snowshoeing here with a group. We have lunch at the friendly little restaurant Châlet du Lac de la Rosière. Thank you to the chef for his kindness (photo 3 in the photomontage below).

Set back from the main road, we spot several huskies and other northern breeds. Most are already harnessed to their sleds, and some have piercing blue eyes. All are waiting for their mushers’ signals to set off. The bond between musher and dog is fascinating to watch (photos 5 & 6 in the photomontage below) We climb into our sled and let the adventure begin (photo above)!

My personal opinion which I apply to all dogs (sled dogs or not): do not pet a dog without the owner’s permission and avoid leaving small children nearby.

Where To Dine

Delicate Flavors

I really enjoy contemporary French cuisine, especially lighter sauces. And this obsessive focus on the impeccable quality of ingredients.

Let’s start with the Le Genépi : the chef Thierry Mugnier’s cuisine is subtle, and the combinations are masterful. I especially appreciated the clarity of each flavor. I enjoyed an excellent fish dish (photo 1 in the montage above). Everything is exquisitely refined! The same goes for the cheeses. Our elegant hostess, the chef’s wife Cécile Mugnier, is absolutely charming, as is the rest of the team. As for the setting, it is simply delightful.

As for our second dinner, the food was just as delicious (photos 4, 5, and 6 of the photo montage and the photo below). The cuisine is more classic, less sophisticated than at Le Genépi, but tasty nonetheless. The restaurant is located in a hotel, where one of the lobbies features an imposing life-size elephant statue. The beef in the starter was very tender, and I particularly enjoyed how the vegetables in the main course were cooked.

Ah! La neige!

Retour à Courchevel! Le temps d’un long week-end (trop court à mon goût) je redécouvre cette superbe station savoyarde! Et je vous emmène avec moi! Après une demie journée de voyage, nous sommes arrivés à l’hôtel, l’Ecrin Blanc Resort Courchevel. La vue de la neige me rend toujours euphorique.

L’hôtel

Confortable, récent et au pied des pistes. Lors mon premier séjour à Courchevel, ce 4 étoiles n’existait pas. L’Ecrin Blanc se situe au village de Courchevel 1650 (Moriond) et est “attenant” à l’Aquamotion. Vous pouvez vous y rendre en peignoir et chaussons.

Il est trop tard pour aller skier. Aussi, après une succulente salade composée au restaurant de l’hôtel, Le Grill : je passe la fin d’après-midi à l’Aquamotion. C’est très agréable, avec plusieurs piscines dont certaines en extérieur, un spa, des saunas. Mais il y a aussi beaucoup de monde.

Quant à notre chambre, elle est spacieuse et confortable, avec un salon, une salle de bain moderne, une très bonne literie et surtout une très belle vue (photo ci-dessous). Et une mention spéciale pour la salle de cinéma, où j’ai revu avec plaisir ‘Les bronzés font du Ski”!

Jour 2 : ski-ski-ski & Aquamotion

Chausser ses skis

Courchevel a un domaine skiable de 150 km. Aujourd’hui, il ne fait pas beau et la visibilité oscille entre moyenne et mauvaise, c’est un jour blanc, avec quelques éclaircies de ça et là.

Après une longue interruption sans skier, j’ai préféré redémarrer par une leçon avec un moniteur ESF. La sensation de glisse sur des pistes bordées de sapins : quel bonheur! Suivi d’un agréable déjeuner dans un restaurant des pistes, puis retour dans l’après-midi à l’hôtel.

Jour 3 : ballades et chiens de traîneaux

Le Lac de la Rosière, les chiens et la neige

Pour notre dernier jour, la météo semble s’améliorer un peu! Nous débutons la journée par une promenade au Lac de la Rosière. Le paysage est toujours aussi captivant (photos 1, 2 et 3 du photo montage ci-dessous). D’ailleurs la première fois que j’étais venue à Courchevel, j’avais participé à un tour guidé en raquettes, ici. Nous déjeunons au sympathique et petit Châlet du Lac de la Rosière : merci au chef pour sa gentillesse (photo 4 du photo montage ci-dessous).

Changement de décor, nous arrivons en voiture à Courchevel 1850. En retrait de la route principale, on voit une multitude de chiens Husky et d’autres races du grand nord. Ils sont harnachés. Certains ont des yeux bleus clair acier, c’est assez étrange. Tous attendent que leur musher (maître-chien) respectif donne le go. Le lien entre le musher et ses chiens est fascinant à observer. Nous glissons dans notre mushing (traîneau) et l’aventure commence!

Petit aparté : mon avis personnel que j’applique à tous les chiens (traîneau ou pas), ne pas caresser un chien sans l’accord de son maître et éviter de laisser des enfants à proximité.

Où dîner

Des saveurs

J’aime beaucoup la cuisine française contemporaine, ses sauces fines et légères et son souci obsessionnel pour la qualité irréprochable des ingrédients.

Commençons par Le Genépi : la cuisine du Chef Thierry Mugnier est subtile. Les associations sont maîtrisées, où chaque saveur est identifiable (c’est très important pour moi). J’ai mangé un excellent poisson (photo 1 du photo montage ci-dessus). Chaque plat est d’une grande finesse! Idem pour les fromages. L’épouse du chef, Cécile Mugnier est une hôtesse élégante et absolument charmante, ainsi que toute l’équipe. Quand au cadre, on s’y sent vraiment bien.

Quant à notre second dîner, la nourriture était aussi savoureuse (photos 4,5 et 6 du photo montage et photo çi-desous). La cuisine est plus classique, plus attendue. Le restaurant se trouve dans un hôtel, où trône l’imposante statue d’un éléphant (grandeur nature!) dans un des halls. La viande de l’entrée était particulièrement tendre et j’ai aussi beaucoup apprécié la cuisson des légumes du plat principal.

My Favourites

Two of the places are located in the city of Charleroi: the excellent gourmet restaurant Vilain and the exciting Museum of Photography. While the elegant guesthouse Villa Geva is in Montigny-le-Tilleul, about a twenty-minute drive from Charleroi (pictured above).

1. Vilain

It almost never happen I leave a restaurant feeling enchanted. We had the tasting menu, which allowed us to discover the full range of the menu (at an unbeatable price). And what a wonderful surprise! The quality of the ingredients and subtle flavors. I also really enjoyed all the sauces—quite an achievement! Bravo to chef Antoine Château for his slightly flavored cuisine that is good for the taste buds, eyes, and soul. Bravo also to his partner and associate Margaux Ballériaux and their young team, both professional and very pleasant.

2. The Museum of Photography

Near Vilain, the Musée de la Photographie, Centre d’art contemporain de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles à Charleroi (Museum of Photography, Contemporary Art Center of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation) in Charleroi, is located in a former Carmelite monastery. It is one of the most important photography museums in Europe, with a collection of 100,000 photographs! Needless to say, I had a blast. In fact, we went twice because during our first visit, we weren’t able to see all the exhibition rooms. It’s always impressive to observe “in real life” photos that I’ve seen in books, or on screens! Not to mention all the other photographers I discover! Fantastic!

3. Villa Geva

I’d add Villa Geva to the list of the best hotels in Belgium! From the moment we arrive, Giovanni, our host, puts you at ease. The only suite is nestled in an entire wing of the villa. It features a 12-meter-long swimming pool, overlooking a lush garden! Gorgeous! The contemporary decor is meticulous, every detail is thought out. The bathroom is equipped with slippers and Clarins toiletries. We even fell asleep in the large armchair by the pool. As for the breakfast table, it’s a dream.
