Mercado dos Lavradores

Early Morning: The Covered Market of Funchal

First surprise, the profusion of tropical flowers at the market entry: the same flowers as in Africa and the West Indies. Ditto for certain fruits and vegetables, such as christophine: one of my favorite vegetables in the Caribbean!

Two discoveries: the custard apple that looks like a green apple pine (on the above photo montage). In fact, a variant of soursop. And second discovery, the curuba or banana poka or banana passion fruit (the first photo of this post).

Part of the market is dedicated to fish. On the photo below: huge Atlantic tuna (I thought tuna was a Mediterranean fish, oops!) … Fish of all sizes and colors, seafood … and many tourists.

Santa Maria Street

In The Old Town,

close to the Mercado dos Lavradores, the Santa Maria Street houses the art project “Arte Portas Abertas project”: a collection of doors painted by a hundred artists from Madeira (photo montage above).

At lunchtime, the street comes alive with many terraces and restaurants. In the evening, it’s crowded. There are a myriad of bars, where you can taste the famous Poncha, mixture of aguardente de cana, honey and lemon. You can also taste one of the different versions with fruit juices … Super strong cocktail: watch out sensitive stomach! LOL!

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Funchal: City View From Above

A five minute walk from Santa Maria street, we take the cable car to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, owned by the Berardo Foundation. On 70,000 m², more than 100,000 of plants, some from the Laurel forest (Laurissilva Forest, endemic in Madeira), plus a Japanese garden and a Chinese garden (photo above).

In the Monte Palace Museum, I discovered “African Passion”, the Berardo collection of stone sculptures from Zimbabwe artists (photo montage below, right side) and the “Mother Nature Secrets” space with 700 samples minerals.

In the gardens, I really enjoyed the Klein Blue panel (of Four Elements of Nature), representing water and the collection of Azuleros (ceramic tiles) from the 15th to the 20th centuries scattered in different walks. I couldn’t see all of them (time flies!). My advice, plan 1 or 2 hours to visit without rushing.

Swimming With The Dolphins

Madeira-Portugal-Funchal-Dolphin-Watching-Boat-Trip-1-Photo ©Mademoiselle Le K.

Departure From The Marina

Funchal. I do not know why, but I love everything relates to the sea! Hence the excitement, a kind of trance, winning the broad in the zodiac, with our guides, the captain and a friendly dynamic biologist (photo below black and white). I do my second or third Periscope (live stream)! So sorry, no great pictures of our friends the dolphins, I was filming!

When a pod of dolphins (really impressive in water) swim near the zodiac, water is put to you. The zodiac retains his speed to follow the dolphins (and they go fast) while you hang with a firm hand the rope that connects you to the boat, you dive with a mask and snorkel with nice waves on the surface!

Under water the perception of speed is stronger than on the boat: you’re pulled by the boat, it’s really physical. We were only two girls to swim! Another important detail if you are a woman, put on a one-piece suit (not a trikini)! I spent my time trying to keep my bikini bottom, which partly ruined the show. I even had to don a wetsuit! Yep!

But the little I’ve seen in the water is magic! And yet I have already dived surrounded by seals (magic too!). If you go to Madeira, definitely you have to swim with dolphins, especially if you are respectful of nature: here, they do not feed the dolphins to swim near the boat! Dolphins come and go as they please … which also means that you can not see any ; )

Break @ The Pestana Casino Park

The dolphins trip ended, I go get changed at the hotel and then continue with the interview of the interior designer Nini Andrade Silva.

Photo above: the restaurant’s hall of Pestana Casino Park has a 70s and 80s vintage touch. It could have been used as a set for a movie of Jean-Pierre Melville …

Dinner @ The Restaurante do Forte

The Surprise!

An awesome cabriolet from the 30s picks up us at the hotel to drop us off at Restaurante do Forte, located in the São Tiago Fort close to Santa Maria Street. The setting is enchanting with a view overlooking the Ocean from the ramparts!

We ended the evening tasting the different versions of poncha in the Venda Velha, a nice bar of Santa Maria street, LOL! To be continued

Saccharum Hotel – Resort & Spa in Madeira, Portugal

Good Morning Madeira!

What a view from my deck! It’s been a while since I haven’t been excited by a new hotel! The Saccharum Hotel – Resort & Spa is opened for few months. As I’m not jaded, just a little demanding, it’s always nice to discover a new place I really enjoy!

The room is spacious and minimalist as I like: impeccable bedding, well thought out large shower and separate toilet spaces, with sliding panels. Mix of gross concrete, tinted glass and wood. And the view! Yes I am a girl “of the sea”, I grew up on a beautiful island! So nothing will ever equal the pleasure of watching the sea or ocean!

Terraces and Swimming Pools

Here are my preferred spots to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and the small marina! The hotel is located in Calheta on the southwest coast of Madeira. Not forgetting the beautiful infinity pool on the fifth floor, surrounded by hills! Then difficult to take off to visit Madeira. Lazy Mademoiselle Le K, LOL! Believe or not, I didn’t have time to go to the spa!

A monumental entrance, “the diva way“! The interior design of the Saccharum is signed by Nini Andrade Silva that I had the luck to interview during my trip! I like her way of dramatizing the space with few elements, gigantic photos and playing with chiaroscuro lighting (I hate places with strong lights!).

Creativity, simplicity and elegance. And most important is you feel good and welcome!

My Spring Beauty Routine: Face, Body And Hair

Face Brush And Anti-aging Cosmetics

My Spring Beauty Routine-Face-Hair-Body-Nails-1-Photo ©Mademoiselle Le K

It’s spring again, the cherry trees are in bloom! Happy spring! I really want to share with you my routine beauty of spring!

1. For nearly two months I used every other day, before going to bed, brush the famous face of the American brand Clarisonic. I have a very sensitive skin and my dermatologist is against any water washing on face. But I enjoy it in spring and summer, it gives me the feeling of having an ultra clean skin. So I use my brush with very soft bristles, for 60 seconds (there is a timer) after removing makeup. I finished the cleasing step with The Uriage Thermal Water and I apply the Darphin Revitalizing Oil.

2. My daily care. As you know, I’m a hugh fan of the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum & Revitalizing Supreme! Besides, this is one of my most read posts! This time I tested the Estée Lauder Resilience Lift Firming/Sculpting Face And Neck and the Estée Lauder Resilience Lift Firming Sculpting Eye CremeTwo very good creams with a really pleasant texture to apply on the skin (a treat): the face cream is slightly pearly and has a SPF15 filter. For the eye zone, very little product is enough. These two cares deeply nourish my skin and give a beautiful complexion. This is exactly what I need in spring … when my skin doesn’t shine like a sardine yet, LOL!

3. I like to combine cosmetics with trips, often to destinations I wish to visit. Recently, I add to my beauty routine the Bioeffect ECF Serum, powerful wrinkle reducer from Iceland that contains no preservative, no fragrance and no dye. I apply it only in the evening, on clean skin for optimal moisturises. Great texture, it quickly penetrates. I will update this post in a few weeks to give you the results of my test. I can not wait to see the effects …

Hair Care And Makeup

Hair, LOL! Could it possible that I’ve finally found the right routine? Abracadabra!

1. For all those with ultra dry curly or frizzy hair (by nature or damaged by chemical treatment), I tested three products in the excellent HyfraR’Force range of the French brand Farida b for nearly two months. My two favorite treatments based on vegetable oils (Ximenia and Amaranth, formulated without paraben), are the Masque Restructurant de Jour (daytime mask) and Masque Revitalisant de Nuit (night mask).

For each mask, I apply the product on wet hair after the Shampoing Restructurant (a gentle shampoo silicone and paraben free). And I leave the mask (sometimes I add oil) as a leave-in conditioner during a day (no more) and then I rinse. Hair is really relaxed, soft and shiny! What a great pleasure!

2. To stimulate the growth of my hair which has suffered this winter (massive breakage of lengths). I take the Oenobiol dietary supplement for fortifying the hair and nails, Capillaire Fortifiant Beauté des cheveux et ongles for over a month. This product contains vegetable cystine (amino acid), B vitamins (including Biotin), copper, zinc and bilberry extract. The treatment lasts three months, with two pills a day.

3. A silver eyeshadow for evening summer, it’s just WOW! The M.A.C. Mineralize Eye Shadow de M.A.C. has two shades, silver and glittery silver for a glamorous look. My current must have is the Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil. Great nuance: for the first time, I use a dark brown for my smoky eyes! I also tried the Estée Lauder Little Black Primer. I find it not enough thick as a masacara. I prefer to use it as a base before applying denser mascara, for a longer hold.

Body and Nails

1. yes, I’m addicted to Nail polish, especially in summer! I change colour almost every day! Among my recent discoveries, the excellent Pronails, a Belgian brand. Here is a vibrant red that will make my spring-summer: the No. 345, Detonate Vie!

2. A “Traveler” format for these nail polish! A mix that I enjoy a lot, fingernails in natural colour (nude, beige or taupe) and bright red feet: Amber Stone (9443) and Ruby Red (2581) of Rituals.

3. Also at Rituals, I really liked the delicious body cleansing foam, Yogi Flow and the Hammam Body Mud (a Rasul scrub), its Eucalyptus strong smell has a tonic effect on my mood! Both products cleanse without stripping, making the skin soft as silk.

And what about you? Let me know your spring beauty routine! What your fav products right now? Give me some ideas for my next tests!
