Portugal: 5 Days By Bike From Porto To Coimbra

5 Days By Bike From Porto To Coimbra

Accompanied by a friend keen on cycling, I accepted the challenge of spending 5 days by bike – in fact 4 days actually pedaling – from the north of Portugal, Porto to the center, Coimbra. Or 180.7 km in 4 days! Hello! Far from being a great sportswoman, I had never done even more than 10-20 km in a day: the exceptional bike ride! In short I knew nothing about it and so much the better (lol)!

I was recommended for more comfort, an electric bike. My friend preferred a traditional bicycle. I’ll stop you right away: we also pedal on an electric bike! It’s not a moped, lol! Certainly less difficult than a real bike, but we pedal anyway! And I can say it remains physical, especially if you do it for 5 hours straight.

So that this challenge takes place in a pleasant way, without having to think about practical details, such as: what do we do with our luggage each morning (because we sleep each night in a different place)? Etc … The VOS Travel agency specializing in bicycle trips, organized our trp: starting with the route mainly on cycle paths in beautiful landscapes, our bikes with local assistance (we received a phone with an emergency number). And of course, our flights, hotels and restaurants.

One of our bikes is equipped with a GPS with our route recorded day by day. No more unnecessary maps, a simplified navigation! Awesome! In the morning, our luggage is transferred by taxi to our next hotel (from one town or village to another). Our breakfasts and dinners are also planned in advance. And we discover for ourselves picturesque restaurants where to have lunch on the way. What happiness! And a lot of sweat (lololol!) …

Pictures of the best times and locations of our bike trip below.

Centre of Portugal: Beautiful Hiking in Serra da Estrela

The road is pretty long,

two-hour drive from Casa da Cisterna to the natural park of Serra da Estrela, the largest protected area of Portugal: 101 000 hectares including a chain of mountains with a rare flora and fauna. And the highest top of Portugal that culminates at 1993 meters.

Today program: 19km (about 6 hours) of an easy mountain walk from the central plateau of the Estrela (classified as a biogenetic reserve) to Casa das Penhas Douras Hotel e Spa.

Arriving at the car park, the set looks like a military base straight out of a movie about the Cold War (photo montage above). Very quickly we find ourselves on a trail and there I finally realize how much the view is absolutely stunning (photo below)! Let the adventure begin ; ))

Lagoons!

Even in the mountains, I need to see water, lol! Depending on the altitude, the landscape changes. At the beginning very steep, the landscape offers an impressive panorama on the glacial valleys (dating from 20,000 years), lagoons and granite rock formations. And further down, the scenery turns into green pastures. But water is everywhere, sometimes you can walk on a kind of waterlogged foam.

Carnivorous plants?

Photo above: a butterfly is trapped. I wouldn’t have seen, if an emeritus hiker had not showed us the “creatures” … Actually I expected larger plants. I am really not a naturalistic (lol), I love the space, silence and beauty of the landscape in the “big picture” …

A spectacular setting, by far my most beautiful and inspiring hiking of this short trip in the Center of Portugal, although I liked the natural reserve of Faia Brava too. Enjoy!

Successful Mix of Paleolithic Art & Contemporary Architecture

Early in the morning we leave the Casa da Cisterna to Vila Nova de Foz Coa: my second visit to the superb Côa Museum of archeology, opened on June 30, 2010. My first visit was in 2010, as part of a reportage on the architecture.

The building designed by two Portuguese architects, Camilo Rebelo and Tiago Pimentel, blends into the mountains covered by terraced fields. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to visit the sites that house the rock art of the Côa and Douro valleys. It’s a must see, so plan enough time during your visit!

In the museum, we discover reproductions of engravings and sculptures of the surrounding sites. Always extremely exciting and impressive to learn a little more about our mysterious past back more than 30,000 years! We can feel so tiny …

A museum to visit. All information here

Our Second Hike : The “Calçada de Alpajares”,

or Calçada do Diabo (: the Devil’s Road!). In the afternoon, we follow the path of a Roman road that crossed the Douro and Mosteiro Rivers. The walk begins in a pleasant “easy” way, a bit bucolic (I’m so naive!), to quickly turn into a succession of steep climbs.

In total, an accumulated climb of 393 m, under 34° Celsius (and some cactus)! Level of difficulty: medium (distance: 8 km). Fortunately, the sky is overcast. I really suffered in the steep climbs, with the stifling heat, LOL! Thankfully the beauty of landscapes very different from the reserve of Faia Brava, helps to enjoy the walk ; ))

Wilderness Dinner

Portugal-Center of Portugal-Douro-Dinner on Wild Hilltop-by Casa da Cisterna-1-Photo ©Mademoiselle Le K

Back to Casa da Cisterna in early evening, barely time to shower as we leave for a surprise dinner organized by Ana Berliner, the owner! The only clue: we have to keep our walking shoes … While we take a track through the countryside (the real one!), speculations are rife. But none of us guessed right.

We get off the car atop one hill, lost in the middle of nowhere. Glowing light, golden brown ruins of a small chapel … and I discover hidden by small trees, an elegant dinner table facing the mountains! Gorgeous! Cinematographic view of the sunset, I think of Visconti. Panoramic sequence … Nature, nothing but nature, all around!
