Tokyo, Japan: Meeting Maki Saito of Numero Tokyo

TOKYO CITY GUIDE: TOKYO BY A LOCAL

– The most important Japanese fashion magazines are Nihon Vogue, Numéro Tokyo, ELLE and Harper’s Bazaar.

When I met Maki Saito, she was the Picture Editor of Numero Tokyo. She studied first the English Art and Litterature at Kobe university and Photography in London:

– I wanted to be a photographer. I travelled in all Europe during one year. Back to Japan, I started working at Nihon Vogue and GQ. Then I came at Numero Tokyo, six months before the first issue with Kate Moss.

What are the differences beteween Numero (Paris) and Numero Tokyo?

– We do our own shooting, covers and fashion series. Different cultures, different tastes. In Japan, pictures have to be more cutter and sweeter.

What about her Tokyo?

– Tokyo is a really interesting city with lots of different areas. We have everything. Shinjuku people are different than Shibuya people.

1. I enjoy small areas: Mishuku is close to Shibuya, with small bars and used to be a big traditional place.

2. Last week-end, I went to Jyugaoka station for shopping pottery. I really like Japanese sets.

3. For fashion: Shibuya and Harajuku. I like to go to Beams. I love hats, any kind of hats. I love shoes too, but I always buy them overseas.

As a traveler:

– I feel different, more open minded. I love going to big cities. I came from country side, a small archipelago, famous for Udon (kind of Soba): the landscape and the sanctuaire of 88 temples and thousand steps to reach to one of them (Kompirasan). I enjoy calm and friendly people.

Old Street & Bricklane, London

Yeah yeah sexy Moss is everywhere ? You nearly do an overdose : not me. Old Street : I feel a small twinge of sadness. I lived a bit there, not so far away. When there were just empty offices and an impressive number of underground artists, not called « Hype » yet. It was dirty and barely deserted… Today the district is unrecognizable: I love fast changes.

I haven’t got enough time to go to “my” more favorite place in London, the Tate Modern (Rothko’s exhibition from September 26 to February 1/09). To compensate for I went to many galleries: this one is also an advertising company…

A stop at Hassan’s shop and studio, he is a photographer, an art director and an interior designer and lives between London and Marrakech: www.hassan-hajjaj.com

Going to Bricklane, Club Row… Of course you’ve heard of Damon Albarn, Blur and Gorillaz singer: he might have a studio in this old school called Rochelle School (on the picture below: the big building behind the wall) and some other famous artists too. I read recently the A Fondation for the visual art and culture art development was settled to provide studios and an exhibition gallery to artists.

Here I am in Bricklane, very alive in the week-end and pretty dead today. Vintage lovers, you are actually at the doorstep of paradise !

Vintage for me, I enjoy it in pictures, not to wear. I do prefer buying fresh new outfit. I’ve just received the flyer of the next Viens Dans Mon Dressing in September in Bricklane. A week-end to discover twenty two coming up fashion designers: www.myspace.com/viensdansmondressing

Londres: Old Street & Bicklane

Oui oui Sexy Moss est bien partout ! Vous frôlez l’overdose? Moi pas. Old Street : petit pincement au cœur.

Direction Bricklane, Club Row …
