Seychelles, Praslin: Beaches & Coco de Mer

The Arrival At Mahe

The Departure To Praslin

As soon as I got off the Air Seychelles plane, I took in a cab to catch the Cat Coco Catamaran ferry from Mahe to Praslin, the second largest island in the Seychelles archipelago.

We arrive at the pier under a blazing sun at 9 plus a.m. I stay in the shade, patiently waiting to embark. What a light! Incredible blue sky and white clouds! I arrive in Praslin at 11.30 am, in a landscape of postcard with turquoise waters (photo above).

The crossing lasted an hour … of pure ecstatic contemplation of the Indian Ocean (with air-con)! In the taxi to go to the Coco de Mer hotel, I am surprised by the lush vegetation, steep road and small mountains. Like Mahé and La Digue, Praslin is a granitic island.

The Charming Hotel

When arriving in the lobby of the Hotel Coco de Mer – Black Parrot Suites, I am attracted by the ocean view and the verdant gardens of this 200-hectare property.

The welcome is warm and friendly. Like Ash Behari, one of the owners and General Manager of the hotel (video below), all the staff are smiling and professional. It feels like visiting friends.

And guess where the hotel gets its name from? According to a local legend about the Vallée de Ma! nature reserve:

The Suites Black Parrot are located in the exclusive part of the hotel, on a small cliff with a pool offering a panoramic view of the ocean and beaches. My suite in pictures below.

The Island Tour

The Vallée de Mai

I really enjoy taking the road (taxi or rental) to visit the island at my own pace (sometimes exhausting for others, LOL). I am too eager for breathtaking scenery to stay on the beach of the hotel …

Thanks to my need of action, I discovered stunning coves and beaches! Beware of currents in the water (they can be dangerous), the best is to inquire before bathing.

First stop under tropical rain: the Vallée de Mai, a primitive forest with six species of endemic palms. I have an appointment with the guide Shaun Larue for a detailed visit. He begins by explaining the formation of the Seychelles granite islands (video below).

Oops I was about to forget ; ) The biggest seed of the world grows on the palm trees of the Valley of May nature reserve : the endemic iconic Coco de Mer (photo above).

Back On The Road

Anse Lazio

Crystal Clear Water

It doesn’t rain when I finally arrive at Anse Lazio considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I agree, it is superb!

The quality of the very fine sand, the crystal clear water with emerald, turquoise and deep blue reflections, the rock blocks scattered here and there and the palms and vegetation with different green tones.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to swim. I have a ferry to take to another island. To be continued…

I Tested Air Seychelles Business Class

Long Break At The Lounge First & Business Class

After many adventures on my Brussels-Paris route, here I am at Charles de Gaulle airport (Paris, France), where I take my flight to Mahé on Air Seychelles! Awesome, isn’t it? After the checked-in and customs, I head towards the Air Seychelles First & Business Class Lounge which is the Etihad’s one (Photo 1 on the above photomontage).

The Lounge’s entrance is in the center of the posh part of the terminal, between the beautiful shops of Hermès (2), Dior, Prada, Gucci, Ladurée etc … The space is divided in a restaurant with a buffet and small comfortable lounges (photos below). Very soon, I was offered a snack. The perfect spot to work on computer.

Ready For a 10-Hour Flight

My long legs say thank you!

Ideally seated in the first seat of the first row, window side, I am pleasantly surprised by the large space in the Air Seychelles Business class. Three portholes just for me and some sega (music of the Indian Ocean) as a sound illustration in the cabin! Quickly, I sympathize with my neighbor, Lisa, a young lady from the Seychelles. And we take off.

A la carte Dinner

At our request, soon after the take-off, the hostess who looks after Lisa and I, serves our meals in a table service decorated with a stylized design of Coco de mer (the famous fruit of Seychelles endemic palm tree).

I chose steamed shrimps as a starter, then a fish with steamed vegetables (sorry, I forgot to take the picture) and as a dessert (absolutely not reasonable), a rich chocolate tart (above photomontage). Everything was good and the service discreet and efficient.

Good Night!

Easy-Peasy Wake-up

As always I didn’t sleep the day before and I am exhausted! Once the dinner is over, I simply collapse! No film, no chat, nothing … I pick up the useful Air Seychelles travel pouch to brush my teeth and moisturize my skin. I like disposable toothbrush with mini toothpast tube (above photomontage)! Then I slide my seat into bed position for a short night’s sleep: good night everyone!

As soon as I woke-up, the hostess serves me this gargantuan breakfast (below picture)! White beans in sauce, potatoes and bacon in the morning: an absolute no-no for me, LOL! But everything else was delicious. And most of all I feel rested.

Welcome To Mahe

Beautiful Light

Hi Indian Ocean, I’m back! Yes, it’s been a while since we saw each other! This is my first time in the Seychelles, but I already dived in the Maldives. Guess what, this Paris-Mahé flight was so fast! Now, let’s the discovery begins! I can’t wait to land, get out of the plane and jump in the first ferry to Praslin! To be continued…

Porto Santo: Diving & Dolphins – Day 2

Good Morning Porto Santo!

My First Nitrox Diving

This morning, no time to hang out on the beach. I go to Rhea Dive to try my 7 mm wetsuit and equipment. I don’t travel with my heavy equipment anymore. The diving center has a wide range of impeccable equipment to rent or purchase.

Two other confirmed divers join us. Miguel and Milton, the Padi instructors, drive us to the Porto Santo harbour (below photo 1). We change here (2). Not a sound, as if the whole island was still asleep! I’m a excited I will dive Nitrox for the first time! I’ve never dived with enriched air Nitrox! Small briefing by Miguel about the spot where we are going to dive.

Cloudy weather: on the small boat, the air is cold and a little choppy sea. Too much current, we move to another diving spot. I dive with Miguel which is really calm. The water is freezing, but I forget very quickly: the underwater world is so relaxing. And I’m euphoric, when I encounter my first and only ray of this 44 minute dive : ))

Dolphin Watching

After Lunch

Back to the harbour for a long boat ride organized by Mar Dourado Company, among some islets facing Porto Santo (above photo: the coastline of Porto Santo). And if we are lucky enough, we will see some dolphins.

Very temperamental my friends the dolphins (lol)! I’ll see just one or two super hurry : )) Now the sky is clear with bright light! What an impressive landscape! Better than a long speech, enjoy my photos (below)! Picture 1, The traditional cake of fishermen. In fact, its consistency looks like a rusk with a neutral taste pretty salty.

Before dinner, I finally take time to explore some of the famous nine kilometers beach with golden sand. Magic! To be continued…
