5 terraces to relax in Zagreb, Croatia

Croatia: 5 Terraces in Zagreb_13_Photo Mademoiselle Le K_copyright 2013

One of my greatest pleasures in spring

is to spend time at outdoor cafes, watching the sky, street, people and movement … In a city like Zagreb, impossible to ignore outdoor cafes: there are many absolutely everywhere!

1. Galeria Lav

Behind the parliament, I really like this little raised terrace which adjoins the famous Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata), dedicated to the Virgin Mary, where believers and tourists stop. Opaticka ulica 2.

2. Jutro

A homemade atmosphere in this discrete courtyard which also houses the Maks Studio. Absolutely not bling bling and without any tourist: an intimate terrace to delve into the life of the neighborhood. Teslina 9 (u dvoristu).

3. Strossmatre

I had a big crush for this terracce that looks like a French guinguette  and Montmartre in Paris baby … Amelie Poulain (the movie) and you are really near the Museum of Broken Relashionships (a must see!). Better to come by funicular (last pictures) in the evening. Strossmayer Promenade, Upper Town.

4. Cica Bar

This is THE bar that I liked the most! An underground arty flav, like in the Paul Auster’s Brooklyn Boogie movie! A terrace with an attitude more rock than purely fashion, located in a pittoresque pedestrian street. Near ModusTkalčićeva 18.

5.  Basement

Nice teak deck of a wine bar, with  a direct view of the famous funicular! I like the street that reminds me of Montmartre (bis!). The perfect place to quietly write my posts of Zagreb! Here the wifi is free throughout the city ; )

Shopping Design & Fashion in Zagreb, Croatia

Croatia Zagreb Shopping_1_Photo Mademoiselle Le K_copyright 2013

During my single day in Zagreb,

I chose these shops in the city center which offer either creations of Croatian designers or iconic products that have conquered the world, as the tie, Gentlemen! I started to work in menswear (lol)! In short, no need to come shopping in Zagreb, to spin at the same global brands you can find at home!!

1. Modus

An accessory shop for home design. Mix of international brands and Croatian designers. I liked the tote bags (first picture): very cool souvenirs to bring as gifts. The picture 2 shows the Zagreb Design Week poster … Tkalčićeva 48, zagreb. Tel : +385 14 81 3470.

2. Maks Studio

Intrigued by this dress on display (photo 1), I discovered the Boudoir, the store of the binoculars fashion designers, Morana Saračević et Martina Čičko Karapetric. Dresses of princesses for more evening than day  and a selection of hats. Radićeva 25. Telefon: +385 1 48-13-464.

4. Folk Trend

I don’t have a particular shop or market. I’ve just liked a lot the traditional embroidered blouses. I didn’t had time to find a shop with homemade blouses and gowns made in Croatia. If you know some, send me an email or leave a comment.

5. Croata

In an old gallery in central Zagreb (picture 1), I discovered the origin of the tie at the Salon Croata. When the Croatian Light Cavalry went to Paris during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), soldiers “used to tie lively-coloured scarves around their necks in a certain way”. And during the reign of Louis XIV, Parisians really enjoyed this new fashion accessory “in the Croatian way”. Subsequently, as you know, the cravat has become global ; ) Ilica 5 (Oktogon). Tel : +385 (1) 4812-726.

Zagreb, Croatia: Museum of Broken Relationships

Croatia-Zagreb-Museum of Broken Relationships-1-Photo Mademoiselle Le K-copyright 2013

One day in Zagreb

and I don’t have time for several museums, if I want to take the pulse of the city! I want to visit one truly unique museum, the confidential brand new Museum of Broken Relashionships. Let’s talk about heartbrokens, lol! So if you also have a very limited time in the city, it’s THE museum that everyone should experience!

A gem of humor (sometimes ironic) about a disappointed romantic relationships. Who can pretend having never been disillusioned with an ex? You can even see the wedding album of an happy ex, donated to the museum (wow!). The concept is fantastic and  “Get lucky” (ie. Daft Punk). First, you send an object that “represents” your broken relationship. The object must be accompanied by an explanatory legend. Then the objects and stories that passed the selection, are exposed. The exhibition spaces are stunning in a renovated historic building.

Some objects detonate and surprise

(pictures 5 and 6). Reading some stories, lots of fun. Most protagonists whose purpose is breaking presentation, has a lot of humor (pictures 4 and 7)! Between another contemporary art museum showing very pretentious works (often disappointing, if not confusing) and this fresh intimate museum full of self-mockery: do not hesitate!

And I am not sponsored by the museum, it’s just a real nice surprise as I enjoy them! I had a tremendous moment there. And to extend the stealth and pleasurable moment of the “revenge“, check the small museum boutique. Picture 1: an irresistible chocolate to offer to the one who deserve it, LOL! Lucky you!
