La Kryptonite Nella Borsa, of Ivan Cotroneo

With the Brussels Film Festival which ends tonight, I reconnected with the Italian cinema, or movies linked with Italy like To Rome With Love of Woody Allen. So I watched The Kryptnotite nella borsa of Ivan Cotroneo, with Valeria Golino. She’s been more and more beautiful (true) as an actress since Respiro. The pitch: each family has its secrets, some of them are funnier than the others. I liked the lightness of the narrative, broken by serious moments and the fatalistic vision of life, a kind of optimism. The southern Italian accent and the discovery of a Neapolitan underground of 70s (very cliche). Some great pictures, such as the black umbrellas at the funeral and the modest happy end. A lovely movie for everyone (me included) fed up with the depressive European cinema! Oops I forgot the soundtrack of the movie, including one of my favorite songs: These Shoes Are Made For Walkin ‘(but I prefer the Tigerman’s version).

To Rome With Love, the last movie of Woody Allen @ Brussels Film Festival

Tonight, it’s the Brussels Film Festival opening, but since this morning the press has watched a preview of films to be shown in the following days. At 12.30 p.m. I discovered the last Woody Allen. The Manatthan director continues piano piano his European tour with Roma, the eternal city: To Rome With Love. A bunch of famous actors, Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, Roberto Benigni. No real surprise, a quite predictable nice movie, sometimes overplayed. Far from the brilliant Match Point and the vulcanic Vicky Cristina Barcelona. But I really enjoyed the opera singer in the shower (which comes as a gimmick, I promise I will not say more …), plus few lines of dialogue played by Woody Allen. Well let’s say if you just want to relaxe and make a Roman pause or ballad (full of clichés), without expecting to a great Woody Allen: you will enjoy this movie.

Drive: The Amazing Movie!

Rewind : I’ve watched Drive for one month. Slash : it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever watched! Just BRILLIANT! I didn’t go to the cinema for ages. Well I watched the lastAlmodovar in September… Forward : Drive is WOW! A cult movie. Thanks to the neat Nicolas Winding Refn’s making of film, without the boring codes of bad action movies or (worst) motors races movies. The script makes sense and keeps on track till the end, the story starts slowly and is made being faster and faster with sudden braking and ellipses in time. We hang on to our hats,  the story gets carried away while the characters reveal themselves. We unravel the weft, we anticipate, we are surprised. The actors give a real performance. And Ryan Gosling is amazing! I didn’t know him before, just gossips in feminine magazines (shame on me!  lol). Watching Drive gives me back the enthousiastic feeling of discovering a great new director, one of Tarantino’s kind. Congratulations to Nicolas Winding Refn, thanks to you I want to watch films again. And thanks to B for taking me to the cinema.
